With most of the Brass Oil Lamps offered, you have an option when it comes to the type of oil lamp burner and shades available. There are
two types of burners available as well as your choice of shade for your brass oil lamp - student shades, etched ball shades, or no shade at all.
Our elegant etched glass ball shades and our triple cased glass student shades are also imported from France. Each lamp and function lends itself to various combinations of options.

Oil Lamp Burner Options
The heart of an oil lamp is its burner. Lighting with oil lamps reached its peak in the 1800's in Europe with the development of two new burner systems - the revolutionary Kosmos, and its cousin the Matador. Each of our lamps (except the earlier Vintner's model) is equipped with these burners; they are made of a springy solid brass alloy to last for years of daily use.
Kosmos 14 Burner System - The Kosmos chimney is an integral part of the overall oil lamp design, drawing air through and around the burning circle for a radiant, steady flame. They are as efficient and compact as oil burners get. If noted in the product page a high output Matador 15 burner may be substituted.
Matador 15 Burner System Option - This option is available to modify any lamp that comes with a Kosmos 14 set-up. Light output gain is about 25%. Due to the bulge in the Matador chimney, it will not accept a ball shade (EB 01, EB 02). However, the student shades (SB 89, SV 89) work very well with the Matador 15 system. This system puts out more light and heat, but requires more care in use.
Oil Lamp Shade Options
The overall look and function of your oil lamp can be acentuated by selecting the proper shade. The correct shade will direct the light downward for reading or diffuse the light for more of an atmosphere effect.
Etched ball shade - Hand blown, acid-etched French glass globe shades enrich the appearance of your crafted lamp as they soften and diffuse light. Available in either 5.25" (EB01) or larger 6" (EB02) sizes.
**Etched ball shades can not be used with the Matador 15 burner option.**
Student Shades - The attractive student shades are made of triple layered glass and are available in either green or white (as shown). These shades reflect light downward for reading at table or desk and are the popular choice with the Matador 15 burner option.
